Welcome to the University of Michigan 8-Week AI Challenge! This challenge is designed for U-M staff, students, and faculty members who are interested in exploring and utilizing Generative AI technologies.
Each week, we'll tackle a new aspect of GenAI, with practical challenges that showcase the power and versatility of UM-GPT and related tools. You can join the challenge anytime and begin with the week one activities. Once you've completed the challenge and the 8-Week Challenge survey, you will receive our AI Champion email signature graphic to add to your university signature. This swag lets the U-M community know you are an AI Champion at the University of Michigan.
Challenge Overview
The 8-week GenAI Challenge aims to fill a gap for U-M faculty and staff by meeting more of our community at their current level of understanding and engagement with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Each week, participants will receive an email with instructions for that week's challenge and links to additional readings. The primary goal of the program is to engage faculty and staff, offering hands-on experience with AI.
What the 8-Week Challenge will cover:
- Week 1: Introduction to Generative AI
- Understand the basics of Generative AI.
- Explore applications like GPT and DALL-E.
- Learn about U-M's support and resources for integrating AI into academic settings.
- Week 2: Privacy & Security
- Focus on privacy and security when using AI services.
- Handle Moderate sensitivity institutional data, including FERPA-covered student records.
- Adhere to best practices for data handling and consult for personalized guidance.
- Week 3: Content Creation using Generative AI
- Enhance academic and professional content creation.
- Draft lectures, create custom visuals, assist in coding, analyze data, and translate languages.
- Use tools like GPT for text generation and DALL-E for image creation.
- Week 4: Developing Prompt Literacy
- Improve your skills in prompt engineering.
- Utilize resources such as best practices, examples, and troubleshooting guides.
- Practice and compare the results of different prompts on UM-GPT.
- Week 5: GenAI and Email
- Improve email communication with drafting assistance, language polishing, and quick responses.
- Effectively adopt GenAI tools in professional communication workflows.
- Week 6: Generative AI and Your Evaluation
- Use UM-GPT for detailed self-evaluations and assessments.
- Identify achievements, improvement areas, and set SMART goals.
- Week 7: UM-GPT and Proofreading
- Utilize UM-GPT as a proofreading assistant.
- Correct spelling and grammar, adjust tone, and enhance readability.
- Emphasize the need for human oversight in AI applications.
- Week 8: TL;DR Using UM-GPT to Summarize
- Use UM-GPT to summarize extensive documentation.
- Condense long texts into concise summaries and extract key points.
- Apply summarization in academic papers, reports, meeting minutes, and proposals.
