In this role, you'll gain practical experience in troubleshooting and repairing various devices within a dynamic, collaborative setting. You'll engage in both shop-based and on-site tasks, supporting campus labs, students, faculty, and staff while gaining valuable exposure to real-world technological challenges.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and networking issues on university-owned devices.
- Troubleshoot and repair hardware and software problems on computers brought to the Tech Shop by students, faculty, and staff.
- Manage shipping and receiving of parts and devices, ensuring accurate documentation and proper handling.
- Perform upgrades, replacements, and relocations of university-owned computers and equipment in Campus Computing Sites labs.
Educational Value
As a Student Technician, you’ll receive hands-on training in computer and device repair, guided by skilled technicians. Build expertise in troubleshooting software for Windows and Mac OS while working toward Apple, Dell, and HP repair certifications—available to qualified students at no cost. Gain practical experience in incident triage, inventory management, and networking setup, equipping you with skills for a variety of tech-focused careers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a current University of Michigan student.
- Able to lift and carry 60 pounds individually and team-lift 120 pounds repeatedly
- Must have a valid driver's license and a safe driving record
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with Apple and PC hardware and software
- Familiarity troubleshooting and repairing printers
- Experience using hand tools such as screwdrivers and power drills
- Experience driving box trucks and maneuvering large vehicles in close quarters
Work Hours and Location
10 hours minimum per week; most students work 10-15 hours per week during the academic term.

Hourly Rate
$15.00 per hour
