If you are a Digital Signage customer needing to replace an existing signage player PC or TV display installed prior to the new Tiered Solutions, see Existing Signs: Path to Tiered Solutions for information and instructions.
So that we can support you more effectively, review the following steps and assess your needs prior to contacting Digital Signage for more information or to request a consult.
Prepare to Order
Coordinate with Your Department
- Discuss the project with your departmental leadership, communications staff, and IT support.
- If you are part of Michigan Medicine, start by contacting HITS. They will guide you through the process and work with ITS as needed.
- Decide who will be responsible for placing the hardware order with Tech Shop and completing a subsequent registration form for each sign.
- Understand the departmental roles that need to be filled for content management (including sign administration), ongoing IT support, and financial support contact. Refer to Ongoing Departmental Responsibilities for more information.
- Consult with relevant units (such as Facilities, IT, A/V, network, etc.) to identify and confirm who will be assisting with your installation process.
Review Your Options and Needs
- Learn about Tiered Solutions: Details, Cost, & Support.
- Review these Sign Location Considerations.
- Choose visible, high-traffic locations for maximum impact.
- Avoid areas with direct sunlight to prevent glare and screen damage.
- Ensure placement does not block emergency exits or create safety hazards (e.g., near stairwells).
- Check that power is available at each location or plan for needed electrical work.
- Freestanding kiosks simply need to be plugged into an available outlet.
- Ensure wall mount protrusions and interactive content comply with ICC Safe Building Codes.
- Choose what fits your requirements and budget.
- Remember to consider any infrastructure and installation costs you will incur. Specifically:
- Network drop if using advanced or custom tier.
- Power outlet.
- Display mounting.
- Installation labor.

Prepare Your Content
Follow the instructions you receive for managing content for each of your signs. Slides and images should follow the guidelines below.
The ITS Digital Signage service is designed to share content in public spaces. For accessibility reasons, the content can be accessed by anyone. Content managers are responsible for ensuring that no sensitive or protected data is included in signage content. Refer to the Sensitive Data Guide to IT Services specific to Digital Signage.
Install the Hardware
- For installation requirements and best practices, review the guidelines in Physical Installation of Digital Signs.
- Install your purchased equipment:
- For most users U-M Digital Signage offers a simple “plug and play” setup allowing you to turn your equipment on and begin adding content to your sign.
- Installation and mounting of equipment is the responsibility of your unit. TS-Digital Signage and the Tech Shop may be able to advise but do not perform the initial hardware installations.
- Coordinate installation with your Unit IT, Facilities & Operations (F&O), or U-M Net Audiovisual service as needed.
Inform Your Team
- Notify staff who work near the new sign about its installation and capabilities.
- Share contact information for submitting content for posting. Some Content Managers choose to include this information on screen.
- Include technical support contact information and how to report issues.
