Print Service Optimization Initiative

Now through May 2025, Campus Computing Sites will be working to realign print services with the changing needs of the U-M community. As campus operations become increasingly paperless, we have an opportunity to optimize our physical footprint to be more sustainable and less wasteful while continuing to offer dependable, convenient, and cost-effective printing services where the majority of students most frequently need it.

Our Goals

After extensive usage analysis, our team created a strategic plan to adjust the number of printers and locations to match actual demand. Our goals are to:

  • minimize disruptive impact to day-to-day customer experience,
  • maintain essential availability of printing options,
  • offset rising hardware, labor, and consumables cost by increasing efficiency.

What this means for you

Reduced redundancy

We will consolidate underutilized locations and reduce the number of available printers at some locations. Newer equipment is more reliable, which means fewer machines are required to maintain expected service levels.

Enhanced placement

Printers will be located in high-traffic, accessible locations where our data indicates they are most needed.

No cost increase

Current print service rates will not increase.

What to watch for

Fall Term 2024

  • Physical signage at current locations will provide advance notice about coming changes.
  • Online print location map will be updated as needed throughout the project.

Winter Term 2025

  • Hardware removal and relocation will occur throughout the term.
  • Print options via MPrint will show updated availability.
  • Reconfiguration will be completed by May 2025.
