Sol Bermann, J.D.

Privacy & Faculty Affairs

Sol Bermann is the Executive Director of Privacy & Faculty Affairs in the Office of the VPIT-CIO. In this role he leads privacy, IT policy, and data governance efforts at U-M, and supports the Teaching & Learning and Advanced Research Computing teams to enhance and expand their faculty engagement. Previously, Sol was U-M Chief Information Security Officer , leading and partnering across the university on strategic and operational IT security, privacy, compliance and IT policy matters. He also has a faculty appointment in the University of Michigan School of Information, where he teaches on privacy and surveillance.

Before joining U-M, he was Director of International Privacy at Walmart, and prior to that was Chief Privacy Officer for the State of Ohio. He is former Associate Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies at the Ohio State University College of Law, and was adjunct in OSU's International Studies Program, focusing on privacy, law, and civil liberties.

Sol is a frequent presenter on privacy and information security issues, and co-authored “Information Privacy: Official Reference for the Certified Information Privacy Professional.” He actively participates in a number of industry working groups. Sol holds a B.A from Beloit College; M.A. from the University of Virginia, and a J.D. from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
