Starting today, October 27, 2026, all U-M Slack members (except single-channel guests) can now use the Slack Workflow Builder to create workflows in workspaces, channels, direct messages (DMs), and more. Previously, this ability was restricted to Workspace Admins.
You can start from scratch or choose from a wide range of pre-built templates. To create a new workflow, click the plus “+” icon in the lower-left corner of your desktop app and select Workflow. After creation, your workflows are viewable by hovering over the Agents & tools tab in the left-side panel and selecting Workflows.
Like Slack DMs, workflows aren't workspace-specific, so every workflow you create in U-M Slack is accessible from any U-M Slack workspace. Please be mindful of others when creating workflows in channels or DMs, as they can be disruptive.
Important: By default, everyone in U-M Slack can find and copy the workflows you create. You should review these settings in the workflow's Permissions menu before publishing.
- Open your draft workflow, click the three-dots icon in the top-right corner, and select Permissions.
- Change “Who can find this workflow?” to an option other than "Everyone internal in University of Michigan."
- Change “Who can copy this workflow?” to Workflow managers only.
Refer to Slack: Create Workflows Using Workflow Builder for more information specific to U-M.
