The ITS Emerging Technologies team is helping the University of Michigan move from AI experimentation to institution-wide impact through secure, accessible, and practical AI solutions. Over the past year, the team expanded U-M GPT and Maizey with advanced capabilities including GPT-5.5 and approval for use with Protected Health Information (PHI), enabling secure AI adoption across academic, administrative, and clinical environments.
The team also introduced new agentic AI capabilities through AI Workflows and Claude Code in the U-M GPT Toolkit, allowing faculty and staff to automate multi-step processes, streamline operations, and accelerate software development within a university-managed environment. These efforts reflect the University of Michigan’s growing leadership in AI and demonstrate how this technology is evolving from a productivity tool into a platform for action-oriented work.
In addition to advancing AI platforms, Emerging Technologies focused heavily on AI literacy and community engagement. Through workshops, a Dev Day Conference, Dev Day Deep Dive sessions, “Make a Maizey” training events, and hands-on learning experiences, thousands of faculty and staff explored how to safely and effectively integrate generative AI into teaching, research, and operations. Today, AI tools supported by ITS are helping improve efficiency, expand access to information, enhance learning experiences, and create new opportunities for innovation across the university community.
By combining responsible governance, secure infrastructure, and practical implementation, the Emerging Technologies team continues to position the University of Michigan as a leader in higher education AI adoption.
