Great Lakes 2 Coming FY27

In FY26, the RFP and purchase of Great Lakes 2 were approved. This will be a major upgrade to high performance computing on campus and will facilitate more computations for research at U-M.

The contract for 500 kW of Bridge Data Center capacity to house Great Lakes 2 was finalized. This includes options to expand to ensure sufficient digital laboratory space for our research community.

Turbo Research Storage

Performance of the system has drastically increased, ensuring the compute investments in Great Lakes 2 and faculty systems do not slow down access to research data.

An additional
8 petabytes

of data were added to the Data Den Research Archive in FY26 — that’s more data than the entire university has stored in Dropbox.

Data Den is the largest single collection of U-M research data with 30 petabytes of data—the equivalent of 6,000,000 first-generation iPods.

Globus, a high-performance data transfer and sharing service used by ARC to move data between environments, moves over
1,000 TB

of data at U-M each month.

In FY26, that’s equal to the data it takes to stream 20,000,000 songs on Spotify.

UMRCP

U-M Research Computing Package (UMRCP) covers the compute and storage needs for more than 70% of U-M faculty at no cost and is available to all campuses.
