Hardware asset inventory provides a simple way of finding basic information about all installed hardware on a network. The Hardware Asset Inventory pilot has been initiated by ITS Information Assurance (IA) to investigate the use of TeamDynamix for the recording, storing, and maintaining of the physical components of computers and related systems. As assets are regularly added and removed from the U-M network, keeping updated information on assets in every unit is essential to the U-M security program.
The success of this pilot depends on properly scoping the capability and ensuring the data is accurate and up to date. There are currently five units that have provided information for our pilot. Those units' expectations include time spent on validating data collected by IA and updating data when needed.
What is not in scope for the Hardware Asset Inventory project:
- A real-time repository of all verified devices on a network
- A configuration management database (CMDB) showing the assets within a service and how they connect
- Mobile device management (MDM) system
