Distribution Layer Routers (DLs) extend the core campus network into a building. Network connections generally include one DL connected to both core locations at 100 Gigabit per second (Gbps) per link or 200 Gbps total. As the upgrade project is still underway, these numbers only apply to those buildings that have new equipment. At this time less than half the buildings are on the old network. These buildings will have lower speed connections, typically 10 Gbps or less.
Campus Distribution Layer Upgrades
In 2007 the university agreed that DLs are integral to reliable core network service and the routine and systematic upgrade of these switches should be scheduled and funded centrally. The Provost approved a new Core Network funding model which included the funding for one DL per building or complex of buildings and uninterruptable power supplies needed by ITS.
Funding for secondary DLs, additional ports, or non-standard configurations for primary or secondary DLs are the responsibility of the unit. Secondary DLs will be billed in full as soon as possible after installation and the project being closed.

Network Rates
For units wishing to install a second DL or apply non-standard configurations can:
- Refer to the Core Network Circuit Rates for general pricing
- Contact their ITS Infrastructure Project Manager for a more specific pricing
Administration, maintenance, and support of DLs are handled by UMnet Administration.
