Campus Building U-M Net Connections (via Distribution Layer Routers)

Distribution Layer Routers (DLs) extend the U-M Net Core network into a building. U-M Net connections generally include one DL connected to both core locations at 100 Gigabit per second (Gbps) per link or 200 Gbps total. As the upgrade project is still underway, these numbers only apply to those buildings that have new equipment. At this time fewer than half the buildings are on the old network. These buildings will have lower speed connections, typically 10 Gbps or less.

Note: Some units have elected to install a second DL for redundancy. This has the added benefit of increasing the total connection speed to 400 Gbps for the new network. To identify the current number of DL connections and speed for your building, refer to Campus Building U-M Net Connection Status.

Campus Building U-M Net Connection Upgrades

In 2007 the university agreed that Distribution Layer switches (DLs) are integral to reliable core network service and the routine and systematic upgrade of these switches should be scheduled and funded centrally. The Provost approved a new U-M Net Core Network funding model which included the funding for one DL per building or complex of buildings and uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) needed by ITS.

Funding for secondary DLs, additional ports, or non-standard configurations for primary or secondary DLs are the responsibility of the unit. Secondary DLs will be billed in full as soon as possible after installation and the project being closed.
