IT Transformation @ U-M Services

As a core part of the IT Transformation initiative, the university has been working with schools, colleges, and units on the standardized adoption of specific IT services. Consuming these services centrally will strengthen our overall IT security and will remove the monitoring and compliance burden from individual schools, colleges, and units. These IT services are actively managed to ensure they are compliant with U-M IT policies and standards, security monitoring is in place, regular threat assessments are conducted, and timely remediations are completed.

The standardized IT services include:

  • Identity & Access Management (IAM)
Identity, privileged account management, and access management protocols and training provide the secure foundation for access to the U-M digital ecosystem.
  • New MiWorkspace Core
MiWorkspace Core is a service that provides a centralized technology platform for units to deploy secure Windows and Mac endpoints and leverage a managed print service, utilizing their own desktop support staff. MiWorkspace Core has been designed to expedite security improvements while minimizing costs. MiWorkspace Core is part of a family of MiWorkspace-branded services built to deliver endpoint and print services to the U-M community. The MiWorkspace Full service builds on top of MiWorkspace Core by adding hardware lifecycle management, along with in-field desktop and call center staff for direct faculty and staff support. Units currently utilizing the Full service are not eligible for the Core service.
  • MiServer
MiServer is a virtual server environment service that provides standardized servers housed at U-M data centers with built-in redundancy at all levels.
  • MiDatabase
MiDatabase provides a standardized and centrally managed database hosting environment that reduces the cost, risk, and overhead of running databases independently.
  • MiStorage
MiStorage provides a standardized storage solution for storing and accessing large amounts of data in a user-friendly, secure, and cost-effective environment.
  • MiDesktop
MiDesktop provides a standardized virtual workstation environment that can be accessed from any location using the internet.
  • U-M Net
U-M Net encompasses the set of ITS-operated network and telecommunications systems that enable devices to connect to the Internet and to each other at U-M. These systems are consistent, cost-effective, and securely upgraded and operated to meet U-M needs. U-M Net offerings include in-building networks, VPN, firewall, cable TV, and cellular.
