Overview

The University of Michigan’s IT Transformation is a campus-wide effort to reassess how technology serves and protects our academic community. Grounded in a security-first mindset, this work focuses on creating a safer, more resilient digital environment that supports discovery, collaboration, and innovation at every level of the university.

This initiative has been a collaborative effort, starting with outreach to schools, colleges, and units across campus to understand local needs and priorities. While the level of engagement varied by unit, the insights and feedback provided through meetings, surveys, and follow-up discussions was invaluable in shaping the initiative’s discovery phase. Those conversations shaped the path forward and affirmed that IT Transformation should not be a one-size-fits-all approach. One key finding was that units can and should rely more consistently on U-M’s standardized IT services to raise the university’s overall security posture. At the same time, it was decided that some existing services should be updated to allow local IT teams to maintain their trusted relationships with the communities they serve. The IT Transformation is therefore about building stronger, more consistent practices in critical areas while continuing to respect and support the unique needs of each unit.
