Technical Information

Note: Currently, both DUO Two-Factor authentication VPN profiles and VPN profiles that do not require DUO Two-Factor are available. Choose the Legacy option for the appropriate VPN profile if DUO Two-Factor is not needed.

VPN Profiles

Using the UMVPN - Only U-M Traffic profile sends only your traffic destined for University of Michigan IP addresses (e.g., university home page) through the VPN tunnel. Traffic destined for non-university addresses (e.g., Google) will be routed through your Internet Service Provider as normal.

Using the UMVPN - All Traffic profile sends all of your traffic through the VPN tunnel, regardless of whether it is destined for a university or non-university IP address.

Connecting with the UMVPN - Alumni-Retiree profile provides a secure connection through the U-M backbone, but this connection does not provide access to internal U-M networks or library resources (e.g. journals). Using this profile sends all of your traffic through the VPN tunnel to the University.

Note: ITS recommends users select the UMVPN - Only U-M Traffic profile when working remotely. This profile allows access to services that require the VPN when off-campus but prevents processing of excess traffic.
