Publishing from Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep to Tableau Cloud Server
- Choose Tableau Cloud when signing into the server from Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep
- Login with your full U-M email, just as when you login to the server from a browser.
- For the URI, use ‘um-annarbor’ (or whichever site you wish to connect to), then authenticate with Okta.
Note: You will not be able to switch between cloud sites on Tableau Desktop. You will need to log out and log back in on Tableau Desktop.
Saving Credentials
If your workbook connects to cloud sources (such as Google Drive or Dropbox), you may be asked to first save your credentials on Tableau Cloud before publishing:
- Exit the Publishing Dialog Box in Tableau Desktop / Tableau Prep. Log into the Tableau Cloud server and click your profile initials (blue circle), in the top right corner.
- Go to My Account Settings > Security.
- Click Add next to your data source and follow the prompts.
- Click Test to confirm the connection, then return to Tableau Desktop / Tableau Prep to publish.
Note: If you need a data source type that is not listed, submit a ticket to the Tableau Team.
Flat Files as Data Sources (UNC Paths)
Tableau Cloud cannot interpret your local drive letters (e.g., L:\ or P:\). When connecting Tableau Desktop / Tableau Prep to flat files on a shared network drive, you must use the full UNC path, not the drive letter.

Fully Qualified Domain Names are required for database names and paths. For example:
- Oracle TNS Names: use dwprod.world, not just dwprod
- SQL: use db-fin-dw-prd.adsroot.itcs.umich.edu, not just db-fin-dw-prd
Server Timezone (GMT)
Tableau Cloud displays system timestamps (such as "Last Update Date") in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is 4 to 5 hours ahead of Eastern Time. System dates pulled directly from connected data sources (e.g., Oracle, Denodo) will continue to display in Eastern Time.
