Tableau offers flexible, role-based licensing options, available for purchase on the ITS Software Store. A Shortcode is required for billing.
License Tier Capabilities
Users should select a tier based on the specific capabilities required for their day-to-day workflows:
- Creator (paid): intended for users who develop new dashboards, create and manage data sources, perform data preparation, and publish content to Tableau Cloud. This tier includes access to Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep, and these users can publish to the server.
- Explorer (paid): intended for users who work with existing published data sources and dashboards, create or modify content within Tableau Cloud, and share insights with others. Explorers do not have access to Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep, and users can not publish to the server or web-publish new workbooks*
- Viewer (no additional cost): users who only view dashboards and reports will be provisioned a Viewer license, the cost for which is covered by the university. Viewers must be members of an MCommunity group and granted access to the appropriate Tableau Cloud content. For additional information on security and access see here.
* Michigan Medicine users: if you have a Creator license with Michigan Medicine and need to publish to the Campus Tableau Cloud Server, you don’t need a second Creator License. Instead, you will need to purchase an Explorer (can publish) license. In your request to Software Services, make note of your Michigan Medicine Creator license and ask for the “Explorer (can publish)” license.
Reference the vendor’s website for further license type comparisons.
