Traveling With Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

When traveling, most people can use the Okta Verify Mobile app on a mobile device. Even if you don't have a cellular or WiFi connection, the app can generate a one-time password.

Plan Ahead

Okta offers multiple options to meet your needs when traveling. You may be able to use your regular Okta multi-factor authentication (MFA) option if you need to log in to a MFA-protected system while traveling. Or you may, however, need to use alternative options depending on your preferred option and your travel plans.

  • Plan options. Before your trip, plan which MFA options you will use and enroll in them if needed. See Okta Options for Passwordless and Multi-Factor Authentication.
  • Enroll additional devices. If possible, enroll two devices in case your primary device is unavailable (lost, stolen, not available, dead battery, malfunctioning, etc.). Okta FastPass (available for macOS and Windows) is a good option.
  • No cellular or WiFi service? Use the Okta Verify Mobile app to generate a one-time password.
  • Hardware Token? If you plan to travel without a mobile device, consider taking an Okta hardware token. Available at the Tech Shop.
  • International travel? Restrictions apply for some destinations.

The Okta Verify Mobile app, Security Keys (e.g., Yubikey), and hardware tokens are encryption items subject to U.S. export control regulations. See the Export Control Program’s “Tools of Trade” License Exception for country-specific guidance.
