At the University of Michigan, access to your UMICH account is provided through Okta, an identity management platform. Always verify you are on a legitimate university sign-in screen.
Multi-factor authentication is required to be used by all faculty, staff, and students to access your UMICH account. The Okta Verify mobile application’s push notification feature is the preferred method for multi-factor authentication at U-M.
Okta Verify supports multiple devices at the same time. Faculty, staff, and students are strongly encouraged to have a second device registered to their Okta account to ensure they retain access to their UMICH account if their primary device is not available. Laptops, desktop computers, tablets, and mobile phones are eligible to be registered as devices with Okta.
Passwordless authentication (Face ID, Touch ID, PIN) is available on macOS and Windows devices when the Okta FastPass feature is enabled in the Okta Verify application.
It’s important to note that just as is true with programs like Apple Touch ID, all biometrics used to authenticate are kept right on your device. U-M does not store them and neither does Okta.
See this knowledge article to review all multi-factor authentication options available with Okta.
