System Operations (Storage Team) — Turbo Storage Expansion

Administration & Operations

The Storage Team collaborated with ARC Storage to scale Turbo’s capacity past 20 petabytes. This massive infrastructure expansion directly accommodates exponential research data growth, enabling teams to seamlessly manage larger, more complex datasets.

UMRCP

Advanced Research Computing (ARC)

The University of Michigan Research Computing Package (UMRCP) provides eligible researchers on campus with access to cost-free computing resources. The package includes:

  • 80,000 high-performance computing hours available on Great Lakes or Armis2
  • 16 GB of RAM for Secure Enclave Services
  • 10 TB of replicated, high-performance storage with Turbo
  • 100 TB of archive storage with Data Den

UMRCP serves as an investment in research at U-M. The improvements and increased capacity of ARC’s high-performance computing, storage, and secure computing services will benefit all researchers utilizing the cost-free resources provided by UMRCP. 

Introducing Agentic AI Capabilities

Emerging Technology

During this period, ITS introduced new capabilities that move beyond content generation and toward action-oriented AI.

AI Workflows, a new low-code platform, enables faculty and staff to automate multi-step processes by connecting systems, data, and AI. These workflows can gather information, make decisions, and take action while incorporating human review when needed. This approach improves efficiency and consistency across both routine and complex tasks.

In parallel, Claude Code was introduced through the U-M GPT Toolkit, which expanded its support for software development and technical workflows. This AI coding assistant can read and edit code, generate tests, and assist with debugging and feature development within a secure, university-managed environment.

These capabilities reflect a growing focus on agentic AI, where tools are designed not only to generate outputs, but to help complete work.

Research Administration Advancements

Enterprise Application Systems (EAS)

eResearch eRAM and Enterprise Health System Integration: Delivered a long-planned two-way data integration between eResearch eRAM and the ITS Enterprise Health System, improving research and health system interoperability.

eRAM Customization Reduction: Removed a major custom eRAM component, simplifying long-term maintenance and supporting readiness for the Research Administration System replacement.
