Since 2019 ITS has been working to transform the U-M core network and enable the capability for any building on campus to connect to the network at 100 Gbps (2x100 Gbps or 4x100 Gbps connections for dual distribution layer (DL) switches). These transformational improvements are designed to stay ahead of the demand curve for the next decade. It will enable U-M to leap ahead of the increased performance needs of our research community, specifically data-intensive science.
In order to connect buildings to the upgraded core network it is necessary to replace the distribution layer (DL) switch(es) in about 200 buildings across the Ann Arbor campus. This work will be spread across the fiscal years 2023 through 2027.
Each building will receive one DL replacement funded by Core Network Upgrade Project. For buildings that have a second DL switch, the unit will be responsible to fund the replacement of the second DL switch or pay to remove the second one.
DL replacement will require a scheduled outage. We will be providing unit IT leaders a draft schedule - ITS intention is to work with units to accommodate important work being done in campus buildings, such as:
- Building houses equipment with imminent research or IT equipment investments that may warrant moving it forward in the replacement schedule.
- Critical research, clinical, or construction activities planned for the building may warrant changes to the replacement schedule.
