U-M Net Hotspot

The U-M Net Hotspot service provides a robust ITS-managed router, which offers end users:

  • A connection to the internet and specific campus network resources in locations where U-M Net is not available
  • Wired, powered network ports for client devices
  • Wi-Fi hotspot that supports many more clients than a cellular MiFi
  • Site-to-site VPN tunnel between the router and U-M Net (IA and ITS Infrastructure approval required)

Benefits

  • More Reliable Off-Campus Connectivity: Utilizes both local broadband and cellular services. Performance depends on the available service(s) at the desired usage location.
  • Service Redundancy: If the primary broadband service fails, the cellular service automatically and quickly takes over. Two cellular providers may be used, but failover between those requires minutes of downtime.
  • Secure Access to U-M Net: Securely route traffic through an encrypted VPN tunnel to campus directly from the U-M Net Hotspot router for specific uses.
  • Integrated 5G & LTE Connectivity: Provides high-speed broadband anywhere coverage is available using the best carrier at the desired location (ITS selects and provides the cellular service).
  • ITS managed/monitored: ITS handles the service deployment and management, including the initial setup.
