The University of Michigan strives to be the leader and best in the ways in which we manage your personal information, and recognizes the importance of the privacy of university community members and guests.
This value is best reflected in Regent's Bylaw Sec. 14.07. Privacy and Access to Information, which states in part:
"In collecting, utilizing, and releasing information about individuals associated with the university, the university will strive to protect individual privacy, to use information only for the purpose for which it was collected, and to inform individuals of the personal information about them that is being collected, used, or released. The university will not release sensitive information without the consent of the individual involved unless required to do so by law."
This privacy statement governs the use of the University of Michigan software application, Michigan App, ("Application"). The Application includes [class resources, news, events, locations, and other tools that keep you connected to U-M]. This scope of this statement applies to location information collected by ITS through use of the Michigan App, and outlines:

We will appropriately manage, secure, and keep confidential your location data. ITS staff members with access to location data receive privacy and security training to reinforce this pledge.
What information is collected
Note: Registering the Application is optional, but you will not be able to use some of the features offered by the Application unless you register it.
Should you choose to register the Application, the following information will be collected
Information you provide
- Your name
- Email address
- U-M user name
Information that is collected automatically
- Type of mobile device you use
- Mobile device's unique device ID
- Your mobile device name
- Device operating system
- Internet browsers you use
- Information about the way you use the Application
Information that is collected when opted in
- For Notifications
- Device identifier (a randomly generated ID based upon your device), registration token (generated by Apple Push Notification Service and Google Cloud Messaging), and U-M user name
Why we collect this information
The University of Michigan provides mobile applications to the university community in order to broadly support the U-M research, teaching, and clinical missions, as well as guests of the university. The information listed above is collected automatically to support and improve the service.
How this information is used
We use your location information to provide contextually relevant data like bus arrival times and nearby buildings on campus.
We may also use the information you provided us to contact you from time to time to provide you with important U-M related information, notices and marketing promotions.
Legal/Health/Safety: Your data may be used to address health or safety concerns, and when required by law.
With whom will this information be shared
We will not share the information we collect about you with non U-M third parties. We may reference aggregate data within presentations to partners.
We may disclose collected information: as required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena, or similar legal process; when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the university's rights, your safety or the safety of others.
What choices you can make about your information
You opt into data collection when you register the Application.
If you wish to opt-out of data collection, you must uninstall the Application. To do so, use the standard uninstall processes of your mobile device or via the mobile application marketplace or network.
How is this information secured
We recognize the importance of maintaining the security of your personal information. We use reasonable security measures, including physical, administrative, and technical safeguards to protect your personal information.

If you have any questions regarding privacy while using the Application, or have questions about our practices, please contact us via email at email@example.com.
We do not use the Application to knowingly solicit data from or market to children under the age of 13. If a parent or guardian becomes aware that his or her child has provided us with information without their consent, he or she should contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will delete such information from our files within a reasonable time.
