Getting Started with Canvas Catalog

Planning and Launching Your Canvas Catalog

Canvas Catalog is a shared service. ITS Teaching and Learning provides the platform, onboarding, training, consultation, and technical support, including escalation to Instructure when needed. Participating departments are responsible for designing and managing their courses, maintaining their Catalog, and providing first-level support to their instructors and learners.

Planning Phase

  • Define your program goals, audience, and requirements.
  • Schedule a consultation with ITS Teaching and Learning (ITS T&L) to learn more about Canvas Catalog and view a demo.
  • Identify the staff who will manage your Catalog.
  • Identify a department contact who will provide first-level support to learners.

Setup Phase

ITS T&L will

  • Set up your Canvas Catalog environment.
  • Provide onboarding and administrator training for Sub-Account/Sub-Catalog Administrators.
  • If applicable, assist with payment gateway setup.

Your department will

  • Design and develop course content.
  • Build and organize the content using modules.
  • Follow accessibility guidelines.
  • View the course from the learner perspective.
  • Add instructors and publish the course when ready.

Launch Phase

ITS T&L will:

  • Provide consultation and technical guidance as needed.
  • Assist with troubleshooting technical issues identified during launch.
  • Escalate platform issues to Instructure when needed.

Your department will:

  • Prepare the Course for launch in Canvas, and in Catalog (including the storefront, course listings, and learner communications).
  • Test the registration and enrollment experience.
  • Provide clear support contact information for learners.
  • Notify ITS T&L in advance of high-volume launches so we are aware of anticipated enrollment activity and potential support needs.
