Microsoft Products for U-M Departments

Licenses for the Microsoft products listed on this page are purchased for all faculty and regular staff members of the University of Michigan (including the Dearborn and Flint campuses). These products may be installed without any additional license fee on any machine owned by the university.

If a machine is owned by an enrolled student or an employee (faculty or regular staff), low-cost licenses for these products are available at the Tech Shop. A department that wishes to provide licenses for employee-owned machines is permitted to do so using a six-digit U-M Shortcode at the Tech Shop.

For additional information about Microsoft Volume Licensing and product use rights, complete details can be found on the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center website.

  • Core CAL
Client Access Licenses which permit client connections to the following server products by all faculty, staff and students at the university: Windows Server, Exchange Server, Office Sharepoint Server, System Center Configuration Manager.
  • Enterprise CAL
The Enterprise CAL extends the Core CAL. This allows certain products (such as Exchange Server) to provide services (e.g., Unified Messaging) which are not included in the Core CAL. The Enterprise CAL adds client access rights for Systems Center Operations Manager, Communications Server, Windows Rights Management and Forefront Security Suite. The university has paid for the Enterprise CAL for faculty and regular staff but not students. Questions about providing services or access for students or non-affiliates of the university (such as alumni or the general public) should be addressed to [email protected].
