Microsoft Teams available for videoconferencing and collaboration

2/3/2021

Information and Technology Services (ITS) strives to provide a diverse collaboration portfolio to an increasingly remote campus. With the upcoming retirement of BlueJeans, ITS has launched Microsoft Teams as an additional videoconferencing option to Zoom at U-M and Google Meet.

In addition to videoconferencing, Microsoft Teams is another collaboration tool option offered by ITS that helps people stay connected and organized. A Google Calendar add-on is available to integrate Microsoft Teams into meetings as an additional option for videoconferencing. Microsoft Teams also serves as a mature solution to allow for team-based persistent chat and workstream collaboration (similar to Slack).

Anyone with an active affiliation on the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses are invited to use Microsoft Teams, and it is available at no additional cost. However, alumni and retirees are not eligible at this time. Michigan Medicine will soon offer its own Microsoft 365 and Teams environment.

The campus instance of Microsoft Teams is FERPA-compliant for student data, and can be used by students in, and instructors for, a class. Microsoft Teams is not HIPAA-compliant, and should not be used to store or transmit any sensitive data, such as patient health information (PHI).

Further enhancements will be rolled out throughout 2021.
