Software Streaming, Follow Me Printing, and Cloud Network Drives Coming to Campus Computing Sites

7/31/2017

In time for the fall semester, Campus Computing Sites and Virtual Sites will have a new, customized software app store and more resources for using Sites resources on personally-owned devices.

Customized Software Access – Starting August 1, software access will be granted based on university affiliation: student, faculty, staff, sponsored affiliate, alumni, general public, etc. Each person will be able to access software that is permitted to be used by their affiliation when they log in to a Sites computer or Virtual Sites session. Role-based access will improve compliance with software licensing agreements, and will ensure cost-effective campus computing solutions. Exceptions for access can be requested by contacting the ITS Service Center.

Application Streaming – Starting the fall semester, software on Sites Windows computers and Virtual Sites will be available through a new software portal, AppsAnywhere, instead of the start menu. After launching an application from AppsAnywhere, the application will download and run on the computer as it normally would. While launching the stream for an application may take an extra moment, the technology will position Sites to allow university-licensed applications to be used on personal devices without requiring Virtual Sites in the future. The technology also improves administration, monitoring, and control over the software.

Access to U-M Box and U-M Google Drive Files – Starting the fall semester, files stored to U-M Box and U-M Google Drive will be available on Sites Windows computers and Virtual Sites as network drives. After signing into a Sites computer, a popup will appear to walk through the steps to authorize the new tool, Kumo. After granting access to Kumo, the files in U-M Box and U-M Google Drive can be used with applications on Campus Computing Sites computers—without downloading and uploading a new version after editing.

New MPrint App & Follow Me Printing – Print to any Sites printer from your own computer or mobile device by using the Follow Me virtual print queue. Setting up Follow Me Printing on a device is a one-time process. Learn more about Follow Me Printing. Use the MPrint mobile app when you are near any Sites printer, or you may swipe your MCard or type in your uniqname and password on any Sites printer equipped with a card reader.
