Network Speed Testing

Network speed testing applications are used to test the speed of a stable network connection. ITS recommends the following network speed testing applications.

Speedtest

The ITS NetGauge/Speedtest application is a customized version of Ookla’s Speedtest application and can be run on computers from a browser window. It is designed to test connections up to 1 Gbps, and tests the connection from your device to the University of Michigan Speedtest server. It provides information on download and upload speeds, latency, jitter, and packet loss.

Mobile Speedtest

iOS and Android users can download the Ookla mobile Speedtest application and select the Merit Network (Ann Arbor, MI) server. The mobile application provides download and upload speeds and latency.

perfSONAR

perfSONAR is a global testing tool used by researchers and science networks to ensure network performance on connections up to 10 Gbps. There are multiple perfSONAR testing points at the university and around the globe.
