Ansible Linux Configuration Automation

There were four different phases of my internship. It started with a crash course in Ansible and how to utilize it. At the end of this phase I had automated the deployment of my own basic server. Then I moved on to automating the configuration of a RedHat basic install to our ITS Gold standard. Once that was completed the next phase was taking that Gold image script and configuring it into a RedHat 7 Login Server. The final phase was taking the Gold image script and extending it to create a RedHat 7 version of the ITS Statistics and Computation Servers.

Automated Web Testing with Selenium

Selenium is an application that allows web browsers to be automated for testing purposes. It is compatible with most of today’s web browsers. Selenium pairs well with the Behave framework. Below, on the left is a visual of a feature file in Behave, which is written in plain English. On the right is a visual of a step file, which is in Python.

MiData

Cohort Project

This group worked together to develop an interface that allows students to view and understand the various data that is collected of them by the University of Michigan, as well as provide them control over what is being collected and help them understand how the university is protecting their data.

perfSONAR Automation

perfSONAR is a network monitoring toolkit, used at the University to monitor and test the strength of networks. Since many of our newer networking devices are able to run third-party software via containerization, an interest has been taken in running perfSONAR in containers, as well as automating the processes involved.

Self Service Virtual Machines

Cohort Project

One cohort group worked on an interface that non-technical people could use to provision themselves temporary dev-servers that live in the cloud. The idea was that the end user would have full control of their instance from the created web application. This project was just a technical proof of concept to see if it would be worth pursuing this concept.

Student-facing Learning Analytics Dashboard

The dashboard will provide a transparent view of students’ standing in the course, reveal behavioral patterns that are associated with good studenting skills, and guide decisions about possible actions students can take that may improve their academic outcomes.

The New Michigan App

Make user-centric improvements to content and features within the new Michigan app using user interviews, contextual inquiries and field studies, affinity diagramming, wireframing and prototyping, and other methods to survey the motivations, goals, and needs of the U-M community. The result is an entirely new interface, with simplified navigation and feature enhancements to help students, staff, faculty or other members of the campus community find places, dining, transportation, news, events, and more.

Who Does What

Cohort Project

A group continued the work of a 2017 cohort group, who created a tool that allows ITS employees to find the right person or team to talk to when they have a problem with a technology or service. This group worked on making the application more useful and maintainable, by updating the existing information, adding new fields, and creating a system that allows the data to be updated regularly automatically.
