Identity

As it relates to Identity Governance, every person has a single digital identity at the university. Each identity is made up of many attributes..

Identity Attribute

As it relates to Identity Governance, each person’s identity includes multiple attributes about them, such as an affiliation with department(s), job title(s), and relationship(s) to the university (e.g., faculty, student, staff, etc.)

Identity Governance Tool

Software developed by Micro Focus that curates and manages access across multiple systems. The tool provides a method for reporting on who has access to what and why, and can automatically update access to ensure the right individuals access the right resources at the right times, from the right environments, and for the right reasons.

IG Business Role

A user can be assigned one or more IG Business Roles. An IG Business Role defines what a person should have access to based on who they are and the work they do at U-M. The assignment logic is driven from an identity attribute. IG Business Roles provide access to Technical Roles and Permissions.

P

Permission

Method used by a system or application to manage which operations a person is allowed to do in an application. Permission names are often very technical, abbreviated, and difficult to remember.

T

Technical Role

A technical role is a meaningful collection of permissions that can be assigned to a person to grant access to applications to perform a job function. The technical roles are created by working with unit business representatives and application owners. They can be grouped with other technical roles and permissions as part of a business role.
