Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)

IPv4 and IPv6 are the communications protocols that define network locations for devices that connect to the internet and provide a common way for devices to communicate with one another.

IPv4 is the prevalent address protocol used across the globe. However, as IPv4 address pools may become exhausted, IPv6 is an emerging protocol designed to provide trillions more available addresses.

The University of Michigan is committed to rolling out IPv6 connectivity for campus researchers and students. ITS has been working to:

  • Enable our Core Network for IPv6 connectivity.
  • Manage the existing IPv6 addresses assigned to the university.
  • Develop a plan for rolling these out over time.
  • Assist units with setting up IPv6 connections, as not all devices provide the tools to connect seamlessly.
  • Connect campus research projects requiring IPv6 connectivity to off-campus sites.
Notes: IPv6 is still experimental at the university, this means:
  • Connections may go down and will require UMnet administrators to restore these connections. Therefore, IPv6 is not recommended for production services or systems.
  • IPv6 is not yet monitored. If you notice an outage, contact umnet-administration@umich.edu.
  • IPv6 networks assigned for testing may not be the same network or addresses assigned when IPv6 is in full production.
  • IPv6 cannot currently be supported by a virtual, departmental, or data center firewall.

Getting Started with IPv6

To add IPv6 to an existing public IP network or request a test network:

  • Send a message to umnet@umich.edu, include:
    • Network name
    • Access layer switch port
    • Building name
    • Unit/Department
    • Contact information (name, email, phone)

UMnet will inform you when your connection is ready. Work will be scheduled during existing maintenance windows and may require the reboot of the server.

Note: Due to lack of IPv4 addresses, we are able to accommodate six hosts on new test networks. Existing test networks with more than six hosts can be supported.
