Changes to Software Access

As of August 1, 2017, software access at Campus Computing Sites is granted based on university affiliation: student, faculty, staff, sponsored affiliate, alumni, or guest. When you log in to a Sites computer or a Virtual Sites session, you will be able to access software that is permitted to be used by your affiliation. If you have multiple affiliations, you will be able to access software granted to each one.

Browse the Sites Software List for software available to your U-M affiliation on Mac and Windows computers.

Sites software availability is grouped by the following types of use and the corresponding UM-Ann Arbor affiliations by default. If you are affiliated with the UM-Dearborn or UM-Flint campuses, you will have guest access.

Available for: Eligible Users (UM-Ann Arbor campus):
Open Use Students, faculty, staff, alumni, sponsored affiliates, and guests
Student Instruction Only Students and faculty
Student Instruction & Non-Commercial Research Students and faculty
Student Instruction & Administrative Students, faculty, and staff

Request an Exception

You may request access to additional software titles even if that tile is not eligible to due to your affiliation with the university. If you intend to use an application for one of the “available for” categories listed above, you may submit an Exception Request Form.

Sites staff review and approve exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Exemptions are valid for one academic year and expire annually in August; following the end of the summer term. You will have to submit a new request to renew your exception for the next academic year.

If you have questions, please contact the ITS Service Center.

Other Options for U-M Staff

If you are a staff member who does not qualify to receive an exception, or if you need long-term access to the software, you have the following options:

  • Follow your department’s software request process to request access to use the software on your university-provided computer. You may order from U-M Procurement’s M-Marketsite or from ITS Software Services.
  • If you have a computer supported by MiWorkspace, refer to Install or Request Additional Software for additional software options provided by ITS.
  • The Tech Shop offers software at academic pricing for use on personally-owned devices.
