University Distributed Antenna Systems

Cellular signals and 800 MHz signals used by public safety and facilities radios can be poor in large existing buildings and new energy-efficient buildings on campus.

ITS is looking to install Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) to our existing phone and data network infrastructure and potentially amplify these signals.

ITS is partnering with Facilities and Operations; the Department of Public Safety and Security; Architecture, Engineering, and Construction; and others to explore whether the installation of DAS systems could improve cellular and radio coverage in:

  • New energy efficient buildings,
  • Existing buildings under renovation, and
  • Existing buildings with historically poor coverage.

In 2015, ITS installed the first DAS system in Munger Graduate Residences Building. It immediately improved 800 MHz coverage, and improved cellular coverage for Verizon and AT&T customers when those vendors connected to the DAS system.
